Legal Disruptor Alice Stephenson Liquidates Firm and Launches Plume: A New Legal Practice

Alice Stephenson, the self-proclaimed “most-followed UK lawyer on LinkedIn”, has made headlines after liquidating her firm, Stephenson Law, with debts of approximately £1.5m. Despite her massive following on the networking platform, the closure of her firm came as a shock to many.

Stephenson, who founded Stephenson Law in 2017, had built a reputation as a legal disruptor, challenging the norms of the male-dominated legal profession. She had amassed a large following by promoting her business philosophy and personal brand as a rebel fighting for justice and change in the legal world.

The entrepreneur also published a book, (Out)Law, which explores her journey of defying adversity to become a beacon of change in the legal industry. Additionally, she offered courses on how to start a law firm, one-to-one coaching sessions, and other services to support the future of law firms.

The closure of Stephenson Law was attributed to expensive insurance costs that ate up a significant portion of the firm’s revenue. This led to the decision to wind down the regulated firm and continue as Plume, an unregulated legal practice, free from the burden and expense of SRA regulation.

Despite the liquidation of Stephenson Law, Alice Stephenson has seamlessly transitioned to Plume, presenting the change as a “key milestone” for the legal practice. Plume, which was incorporated in 2020 and had only one employee (Stephenson) and £9 cash at hand last year, is now touted as a “multi-award winning legal services provider”.
